Feeder Regions for Tacoma Elementary Schools and thier

Impervious Surfaces

Impervious Surface

The objective of this analysis was to analyse four factors across elementary schools in Pierce County.  They were: zoning, area of school grounds, composition of school grounds, and school feeder regions.  By using various tools in ArcGIS, I was able to produce a map that conveyed this information visually to assist in planning for a new school or re-designing an old school.

ArcGIS Spatial Analysis Tools and How They Work

Feature to Point

To create points from a polygon I used the Feature to Point tool.  This allowed me to take the school polygons and convert to points, so that could preform the  next step, Thiessen Polygon.

This tool is found in the ArcToolbox, under Data Management Tools, Features, Features to Point

Thiessen Polygon's

To create the elementary school feeder regions, I created Thiessen polygons.  This tool is found in ArcGIS and is used to proportionally divide and distribute a point coverage into regions.

This tool is found in the ArcToolbox, under Analysis Tools, Proximity, Create Thiessen Polygon's

Other maps created from same data

I was experimenting with the data and ArcGIS Analytical Tool, which I created this map from.
